Autumn is when the leaves turn golden and the nights start drawing in, but it doesn’t mean you need to pack your Lay-Z-Spa away. During this time it is important you keep on top of hot tub maintenance in order to ensure your hot tub in prime condition. Below we have some top tips for maintaining your hot tub in the autumn months.
Insulate Your Lay-Z-Spa
With the Autumnal minimum air temperatures likely to dip to around 6 to 8°C on average in the UK, an insulated Lay-Z-Spa will help maintain heat while reducing power consumption and reduce energy costs. There are a number of ways you can ensure you're keeping as much of the heat in the spa as possible and preventing it from escaping into the Autumn air.
Insulating Lid and Top Cover
Often overlooked, using the Lay-Z-Spa Lid is a great way to prevent heat loss and save money. Keep it securely tied, clipped or fastened to ensure your Lay-Z-Spa stays insulated when it’s not in use.
Insulated Floor Mat
Helping with insulation and minimising the loss of heat through the base of the spa, a Lay-Z-Spa Floor Protector can also add protection to the bottom of the spa.
Thermal Cover
Our double-award winning Lay-Z-Spa thermal covers are a brilliant way to make your hot tub up to 40% more energy-efficient and protect it from the elements.
Sheltered Location
Spend less time heating and more time enjoying your Lay-Z-Spa by placing it near a windbreak. A fence, wall or shelter can act as a great windshield preventing temperature loss and ultimately saving on heating costs. You can even create your own, get some inspiration from our Pinterest board.
Keep fallen debris out of the water
However gorgeous and colourful the autumn leaves are, nobody wants them floating around in their Lay-Z-Spa. They cause all sorts of problems including cloudy water and filter blockages so it is important to prevent them from getting in.
Ensure Your Lay-Z-Spa Top Cover is on
Keep the protective top cover on your Lay-Z-Spa when you are not using your hot tub. By doing so it will prevent debris like leaves and twigs from falling into your spa.
Shower Before Entering Your Spa
This is recommended for any time of year. Showering before every use of your hot tub helps to wash off natural oils that accumulate on your body as well as any deodorants, moisturisers etc. helping your filters last longer, and helping keep your water in good quality.
Skim Your Water After Use
Skimming your spa water after use will help to keep the water chemical balance at an optimum level whilst prevent your spa filter from becoming blocked with leaves and other debris. Our All-In-One Cleaning Kit contains everything you need to remove any stubborn debris, slime or mildew.
Maintain Your Hot Tub Filter Cartridges
Keeping your hot tub’s filter cartridge in optimum condition is essential to ensure the most efficient operation of the pump.
Check Your Filter Cartridges
We recommend that between each use, and at least every 3 days, that you should remove the filter and remove any debris. To check your filter cartridges you will need to do the following:
- Turn off the filtration function on your pump
- Remove the filter housing unit from inside the spa
- Unscrew the filter housing unit
- Remove the filter cartridge and remove any obvious blockages to increase the flow rate and improve heating efficiency.
Clean Your Filter Cartridges
Every 3 days or after each use, simply hose the cartridge down to clear any stubborn dirt and residue that may be causing a blockage. This practice will also help to prevent algae growth. If you are struggling to remove the dirt or the filter paper has become hard, it’s time to replace it.
Replace Your Filter Cartridges
Every few weeks depending on the intensity of use, old filters should be replaced with new ones (especially when they become harder and discoloured). We recommend changing your filter cartridge once every 2-3 weeks during periods of heavy use.
